St. Augustine, Florida

The past comes alive in the cobblestone streets of St. Augustine, America's oldest city, with landmarks that have withstood five centuries of wartorn history. The beautiful Spanish architecture and cultural influences are reminders of the area's unique and exciting origins. Ponce DeLeon discovered St. Augustine in 1513 and the city was founded in 1565 by Pedro Menendez de Aviles for the King of Spain. Having served under five flags, the city has survived numerous battles, famines, fires, and attacks by pirates, soldiers and indians.

After five wooden forts, Castillo de San Marcos was built in 1672-1695 from tiny Coquina shells which kept the walls from crumbling as they would if made from stone. In 1702 fifteen hundred Spaniards retreated into the Castillo while British soldiers stormed the city for 50 days. Unable to penetrate the fort, they eventually gave up and burned the entire city in frustration.

St. Augustine with its picturesque old world elegance offers 43 miles of white sand beaches, a wide array of cultural and historical attractions, boutiques and restaurants, and outdoor activities. The nation's "first city" is home to such monuments as the oldest wooden schoolhouse, the oldest drugstore, the oldest jail, the oldest fort, and the oldest house in the US. It also boasts the oldest lighthouse in the state of Florida.
